What is Concussion Rehabilitation?

Updated: May 29

Concussions are difficult injuries that can occur in multiple different settings. Often the result of an impact to the head or body, they can lead to symptoms like headaches, dizziness, nausea, mood changes, and trouble concentrating. Research has shown that many symptoms from concussions improve significantly or resolve within a few weeks. If you think you have suffered a concussion, you should always see a medical doctor or nurse practitioner. If you wan to return to sport following a concussion, it is the law, in Ontario, that you are assessed and cleared to return to your sport by a medical doctor or nurse practitioner. Some people who suffer concussions go on to suffer from symptoms that last longer than a few weeks. When this is the case, concussion rehabilitation can be quite helpful.

Rehabilitation for post-concussion syndrome is provided based on physical limitations and symptoms that are caused by functional changes to regions like the neck, eyes and balance, and changes in blood flow (that often come with exercise or stress). There is a wide range of research that shows that symptom severity and tolerance to activity can be improved by approaches done, by a chiropractor or physiotherapist, in a rehabilitation setting. If you suspect that you have suffered a recent concussion, contact your medical health care provider to see if concussion rehabilitation might be appropriate for you.
