What is Post-Concussion Syndrome?

A concussion is often characterized by the neurometabolic changes in the brain that follow an impact. These changes have been shown to linger for 21-45 days following the impact. Studies have shown that many who suffer concussions will improve quickly. Some may even become symptom free within a matter of 1-2 weeks. There is an unlucky percentage of those who have suffered a concussion who can go on to suffer from pain and symptoms that last longer than 4-5 weeks. When this happens it is often referred to as post-concussion syndrome.

Timing of post-concussion syndrome
time is the main characteristic that differentiates post-concussion syndrome and concussion

The persistent symptoms from post-concussion syndrome often include headache, neck pain, dizziness, fatigue, mood changes, nausea and trouble sleeping. While there is still some uncertainty about the cause of these symptoms, researches and health care providers who treat post-concussion syndrome have found 3 clinical subtypes of post-concussion syndrome that suggest that these persistent symptoms are the result of functional changes to structures around the head, but less likely to be due to changes in the brain. These changes, around the head, have bee the cervical spine, oculo-vestibular system, and physiological changes in the blood vessels of the neck and head. The evidence supporting these clinical subtypes of post-concussion syndrome also suggests that treatment in these areas, with physical rehabilitation, with a chiropractor, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, or athletic therapist can reduce the severity of symptoms and help sufferers of post concussion syndrome return to normal activities and the things that they love. There are different types of exercise that have been shown to be very helpful in the management of post-concussion syndrome.
